When we got in the Dr.'s office he asked Sharlene if she'd considered hip resurfacing? We weren't aware that there were any other options besides total hip replacement- so we weren't sure what he was talking about. It turns out that they have developed an alternative to hip replacement surgery for those under 65 years old. They have been doing it in England for 10 years, but no one really does it in Saskatchewan. A friend of his in Calgary is an expert in the field and would be willing to do it for us if SaskHealth will pay for the procedure.
The benefits are:
- That it definitely lasts more than 10 years (90% do) in younger, Active adults.
- It only covers the hip ball and joint and does not require removing the ball. Therefore when it does eventually need replacing in 15-20+ years, Shar could then get a hip replacement without issue.
- If she was to get a total hip replacement now, it may wear out in around 10-15 years, (average time for older less active seniors- maybe less for younger active adults) and she may or may not be able to get another one which would leave her possibly in a wheelchair at age 50 or so.
- The hip resurfacing may give her 10-20 years of extra pain-free walking before hip replacement surgery and maybe a total of 20-40 years of pain free walking.
The downside- :
- We don't know if SaskHealth will approve the surgery.
- We don't know when she could get in- it will likely mean another trip to Canada for her later in 2007 or 2008
Please pray for:
- Wisdom
- Favourable decision from Saskhealth
- At Least 7 additional partners at an average of $50.00/month each for Mission Field Health Insurance!
Thanks,
Until Next time,
Mike, Shar and Family
