Hey,
Shar got a phone call form the Dr. yesterday saying that indeed the hip resurfacing procedure is covered by SaskHealth. The question now is when can it be done. We are praying that the Dr. in Calgary will be able to fit her in while we are here- otherwise she will need to come back some other time by herself for 4-6 weeks-- hopefully while we are still covered by SaskHealth!
Please pray for the timing of this procedure, that God would work it out for it to happen before we go back to Mexico. We trust that HE has things worked out for His Glory- We're trusting in our Heavenly Father to orchestrate His will!!
God bless until next time,
Mike for the family

surgery prayer request.
Today we went to the Dr.'s office in S'toon and to the hospital for all the necessary blood work and tests they do prior to surgery.
When we got in the Dr.'s office he asked Sharlene if she'd considered hip resurfacing? We weren't aware that there were any other options besides total hip replacement- so we weren't sure what he was talking about. It turns out that they have developed an alternative to hip replacement surgery for those under 65 years old. They have been doing it in England for 10 years, but no one really does it in Saskatchewan. A friend of his in Calgary is an expert in the field and would be willing to do it for us if SaskHealth will pay for the procedure.
The benefits are:
The downside- :

The benefits are:
- That it definitely lasts more than 10 years (90% do) in younger, Active adults.
- It only covers the hip ball and joint and does not require removing the ball. Therefore when it does eventually need replacing in 15-20+ years, Shar could then get a hip replacement without issue.
- If she was to get a total hip replacement now, it may wear out in around 10-15 years, (average time for older less active seniors- maybe less for younger active adults) and she may or may not be able to get another one which would leave her possibly in a wheelchair at age 50 or so.
- The hip resurfacing may give her 10-20 years of extra pain-free walking before hip replacement surgery and maybe a total of 20-40 years of pain free walking.
The downside- :
- We don't know if SaskHealth will approve the surgery.
- We don't know when she could get in- it will likely mean another trip to Canada for her later in 2007 or 2008
Please pray for:
- Wisdom
- Favourable decision from Saskhealth
- At Least 7 additional partners at an average of $50.00/month each for Mission Field Health Insurance!
Thanks,
Until Next time,
Mike, Shar and Family

Rain Rain Go Away....
We've been in Canada for almost 2 weeks now and we've seen more rain now than the previous 10 months put together!! It was really nice at first to smell the rain and feel the rain... but now we're thinking of building a big boat and wait for the animals...
Our first week here we spent some time at Loon Lake and visited around quite a bit. We're looking forward to going back for a week to speak and camp at Silver Birch Bible Camp and maybe get a chance to see some more folks there...
Then we went to Swan River, MB to visit friends Irvin, Mari and Leah Penner and to share our vision for ministry at Little Woody Baptist Church. We had a great time there. The Penners rented us a motel room for the week. There was a pool with a waterslide there- we all spent countless hours there getitng waterlogged and visiting.
The Sunday at Little Woody went well. We had quite a few folks interested and checking our display table out. We had 8 or 9 kids get sponsored for School in the last 2 weekends! Praise God! Please pray that folks also catch a vision for our ministry and come alongside us as financial and prayer supporters in the coming weeks ahead!
Now we are in Prince Albert, SK staying with our good friends, the Sauers. Today was their kids last day of school so the Sauer kids and McDonald kids are all gung ho about hanging together this next week and a half!!
Until Next time,
Mike for the Family

Welcome to Canada, eh?
Yesterday was a travel day for us... We were all awake around 7am after a late night packing and saying goodbye to friends. It was very apparent the night before that our packing situation needed some assistance. We were running out of room and not quite finished. So Elijah and I took an outing to the Mercado where we'd seen luggage before. Sure enough after a drive through, we found a stall and parked the van. I excited the van the normal way, but something seemed amiss.
"Elijah", I inquired. "Did we have this back , side window in the van when we left this morning.
Elijah sauntered over to my side for a look. "I think so", he said. "If it wasn't there, I sure didn't notice."
We calmly looked over the situation until we were reminded of our task. "Wait a minute", I thought. "we're not here for windows. We're here for a suitcase- we'd better hurry."
And off we went to purchase the necessary item.
Luggage in hand, we drove down the same bumpy, rutted, crazy road we came in on- looking for piles of glass that may be our window.
Almost near the end of the rutted-roller-coaster ,type road we came upon a perfectly healthy, single piece of tinted glass that looked an awful lot like the one we had lost- right there in the middle of the road! We took it, put t in the open window and drove over to the auto-glass guys place in our neighbourhood. Turns out he only moonlights in autoglass and has a real job the rest of the day- he won't be back till 7 or 8 tonight... we want to go to the airport in 2 hours...
Off to the next autoglass place.
The fella there looked at the job and fiddled with it until almost 10:00- official take off time, only to declare "I'm done trying- take it to the next autoglass shop 1/2km down the road.
That shop was very accommodating. He looked at the taped up semi-glued in window for about 5 minutes- then left to deal with another customer. When he returned, he had a business card for yet another autoglass place that may be willing to try- but it was somewhere in Tijuana, not in Rosarito where we live- all of a sudden I came to the stark realization- its after 10:00 AM, we have a breezy van that we cannot take over the border-- and our options of transportation are running out- we need to find a way over soon.
We borrowed a YUGO Van, after a few phone calls, and found ourselves with a very short border wait and some time to spare to do some of the errands we had planned on doing. We made it to the airport and were in the security checkpoint 30 minutes before boarding. We made it on time!
The boys loved the plane-- Jacob was a little unsure at first saying it made him feel a bit strange as we ascended during take-off. He had brought some stuffed animals along for the ride and declared before we had reached cruising altitude that the puppy didn't really like fling very much, it made his stomach woozy. About 15 minutes later, though, he lifted the window blind and was right into it- so was Jacob.
As we were flying towards Seattle airport we were amazed to see- quite a far distance above the clouds- three huge-- i mean HUGE mountains bursting through the cloud layer. One is Mt. Rainer, the other St. Helens but I don;t know the third. They looked so out of place from everything else we'd seen on the ground- it was very cool.
When we approached the Seattle airport and broke through the cloud layer- Elijah exclaims loud enough for several rows of people to hear " look at all the trees, dad- LOOK AT THEM!! Do you think they are all real? That's a lot of stinking trees! Why do they have SO MANY TREES!!??!?"
Wonder if this kids been living in the desert for the last10 months!
After a 2 1/2 hour layover we boarded our propeller plane for Edmonton- it was big enough for about 60-70 people but was a little over half full. While we were waiting to board a couple sitting across from us in the waiting area asked the boys if they were excited to go flying? The boys got excited telling the about the trip so far. We found out that the couple was from Edmonton area and had just been in Alaska fishing. When we told them we were from Mexico- they asked- what are you doing in Canada.
Elijah declared "we are going home to raise support, talk in camps and churches, to hang out with friends and for my mom to have surgery"== he's heard the line before eh?
"You must be missionaries then".
"Yes" said Elijah.
"We were in Mexicali on a mission trip in 2001, with a group called YUGO, do you know them?"
"YES said Elijah excitedly!"
We're going out for breakfast with them today!
We'll keep this updated when we can-- we're off to Loon Lake today and will be without steady internet access till Tuesday night in Swan River.
Untilnextime, eh.

Leaders Meeting part 2
Last Thursday we had our Pastors Trianing meeting to give all the information out and get any questions- but we did not have everyone out to that meeting. So we decided to meet atain on Monday (last night).
This time Pastor Juan came out on the bus to our place to spend the day with us before hand. He had just bought a computer and wanted help with it. We looked at his very old laptop which didn't work so well and encouraged him to get his money back- Because I could get a better one for him in the US when I return. Then we went for tacos. Anyday with tacos is a good day!
We went over lots of questions people were having about the application and then ventured out to the East TJ Colonias for the meeting. This time we had a guide, so we were early. The 6:00 meeting did not start until 6:45. We had 3 different people come out and a few of the others from last week who wanted help filling out applications. We talked, and laughed and ate frituras (deep fried wheat wheels) and got the information we needed passed on. One pastor couple are looking at bringing up to 4 others from their church out as well, so the number is up to around 20 people- about half are pastor couples and half are church leaders.
They all seem very excited to get going in September- This is going to be a learning experience for all of us. The people are gracious and hungry to know more of Jesus. I'm looking forward to learning more with them!
On a side note, I had a good chance to talk to Pastor Juan about Mexico and Mexican culture and the situations that people find themselves in over in the area we are serving. There are quite a few "single moms" there in that Colonia. It turns out that many of the fellas are either in jail, drug or alcohol addicted or have been cheating and so are off at a girlfriends place now. So I wondered out loud how single moms with 2, 3, 4, 5 survive?
Sometimes, the moms need to give their children up to an orphanage so they can work. Some take the kids back on weekends, some don't.
Sometimes the moms don't work because they don't want to give their kids up- so they survive on Mexican Welfare which is $25.00/ week. They live in ramshackle squatters homes on government land, steal power from the overhead lines and eat only beans, rice and tortillas- as long as they have some.
Now many of these kids are ones who we want to find sponsors for so they can go to school. It costs $100/ year to outfit the kids for school. Which is about 1 months wages / kid on a less than subsistence budget.
Please check out below for some pics of some of these kids- don't let the nice clothes fool you. Becaus eof the proximity to the border there are literally tons of used clothing coming into the area for free distribution- so they look nicely dressed, but it does not mean the same thing as it does in US or Canada!
If you are interested in Sponsoring a kid or 2 for school (About $100.00/ child/ year) please let me know- or contact YUGO Canada at the address on the side bar!
We leave for Canada tomorrow with mixed feelings. We love Mexico and are eager to get busy with the work of training pastors, but are excited about reconnecting with Partners and friends- and speaking at camps- and getting new hips (ok 1 new hip- that one was from Shar)!
Please pray for travel safety and as we connect in churches that we would find more people to partner with us in ministry! We need some additional regular support in order to allow us to stay on the field, training church leaders to impact lives in Mexico and beyond!
Blessings until next time,
Mike

Pastors Training Meeting
We had an interesting day yesterday---
We crossed over to the US in the morning to do some shopping before we go to Canada and late in the afternoon, I asked shar if she wanted to come with me out to the E. Tijuana Colonias to the pastor's training meeting- she said yes and off we went on our adventure.
The meeting was to start at 6. Knowing some about Mexican time, we were not in a rush to arrive on time and wait. We checked out a bookstore, got some gas and food to go and off we went to the other side of Tijuana on the new highway that cuts across the range of hills south of TJ.
As soon as you get on the road, you see a dead horse on the side- It was obviously hit by a car or truck some time ago as now it is basically a horse "rug" on the shoulder. Further on there is a more newly hit horse in the median of the road and two dead cows further along.
This looks like a road to be careful on!
We made it through there in good time only to miss our turn off because of construction. So we drove for another few Km and turned around and tried to go around the construction- bottoming out 3 times! We then came to a concrete barrier that hindered our progress much immensley!
So we turned around and tried to avoid any more bottoming out-- (tried) and found a road that went in the general direction we were wanting to go. But every time we tried to get back onto the road we wanted, we found another concrete barrier! So off we went through a walled neighbourhood like the rat looing for the cheese, only our cheese was an exit from the maze! We made it out of the nice paved maze onto some roads that had not seen a grater since Speedy Gonzalez was being chased by cats in this area!
We bottomed out a few more times, slowly, and ran into some more dead ends. by this time we are 45 minutes late for our meeting, which is kind of pushing the polite lateness thing here...
So we found a hill that looked familiar and pointed the van in that direction until we found a road to it! We'd been lost for almost an hour when we came to the church! Pastor Juan said to me- "Yes, we thought you'd be late because you'd get lost because of the construction- so we just had a church service while we waited!- I was going to call you and tell you about it..."
We all had rice pudding after the service and waited for another hour for some others to come. Some left, others came and we finally had our meeting at a little after 8pm...
We had 12 out to the meeting. 5 were pastors, a few others were pastor's wives and a couple of other church leaders out as well. I gave my testimony and talked about the course and took questions from the folks after.
I had handed out applications 2 weeks ago. Only 1 fellow had filled it out. These are not your typical Canadian Bible School applicants... The applications ask if you have a criminal record. One fellow answered: "not in Mexico". I also got "si" answers to "do you have mental or psychological problems?"
The rest were filling out the applications as we waited. We decided there that we'd all come back together Monday at 6pm to finish the applications and have a talk for those guys who did not make it there this time.
The ones who are there are very excited- It will be a very interesting time!

Countdown...
Time is running out as we finalize plans for our trip to Canada. 9 more sleeps!
We have almost finalized our car plans for the 6 weeks we'll be gone. Some Missionary friends of ours, the Hooples have a car outside of Edmonton that we can borrow to get to Saskatchewan. It is an auction car and has not been very reliable for them, so we are going to mix and match a bit with vehicles to give us some reliability. Another couple of friends from Martensville Baptist Church are lending us their vehicle for a week while they are on holidays. Another partner in Ministry is renting us a car while the boys and I drive around to camps in Northwest Saskatchewan.
So Here is our itinerary:
Wednesday June 13 fly to Edmonton- arrive at midnite
Thursday June 14-18th In Loon Lake- Preach at Bible Baptist Church of Loon Lake on June 17th
Monday June 18- 25- Swan River, MB. Preach at Little Woody Baptist Church on June 24
June 26- Appointment @ Saskatoon Hospital for Sharlene.
June 26- June 26-July 6- Prince Albert-
July 7-9 Martensville, SK Preach at Martensville Baptist July 8
July 9- Shar's Surgery
July 9-13- Silver Birch Bible Camp, Loon Lake, SK
July 14-20 Turtleford Bible Camp, Turtleford, SK.- Preach at Turtleford Baptist July 15th
July 22-29 Timber Bay Bible Camp. Preach Timber Bay Fellowship July 29th
July 30-Aug 3rd- Unbooked, unplanned.
Aug 4-6 Ponoka, AB. Share at a church in Ponoka, Aug 5th
Aug 6th- Fly back to Mexico (Mike and boys)
July 12(or so?)- Aug 15th Sharlene in Turtleford, recovering.
Aug. 15th- Shar flys back to Mexico.
Our last major hurdle is for someone to watch our house and care for our animals while we are gone to Canada. Our neighbours were going to do this, but are leaving today for Canada and won't be here during that time! We have a couple possible options- please pray that something works out soon!!
Thanks,
Until Next Time,
Mike for the family

Our last major hurdle is for someone to watch our house and care for our animals while we are gone to Canada. Our neighbours were going to do this, but are leaving today for Canada and won't be here during that time! We have a couple possible options- please pray that something works out soon!!
Thanks,
Until Next Time,
Mike for the family
